ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine men's ice hockey team defeated the #3 Quinnipiac University Bobcats, 4-0, on Saturday evening in Alfond Arena.
Â
The first period skated to a scoreless tie. Maine's penalty kill unit fought off two 5-on-4's and a 5-on-3.
Victor Ostman stopped all 12 shots he saw in the opening 20:00.
Â
Saturday night's second period was much like the first. The Black Bears were awarded their first power play opportunity of the night. Ostman recorded nine saves in the middle frame.
Â
First Goal (1-0 Maine): Cole Hanson started the scoring onslaught in the third period at the 3:13 mark.
Didrik Henbrant had his shot saved by the Quinnipiac goaltender. Hanson backhanded the save into the net. Maine grabbed a lead that would keep growing.
Â
Second Goal (2-0 Maine): While on the power play,
Ben Poisson scored his squad's second goal of the final frame.
Lynden Breen did everything except score the puck. The junior forward made a handful of Bobcat defenders miss until he found Poisson. With
Thomas Freel blocking Quinnipiac's goaltender, the Maine forward doubled the lead.
Â
Third Goal (3-0 Maine): After receiving a pass from
Donavan Villeneuve-Houle,
Matthew Fawcett scored a breakaway goal against his former team. The forward's first shot was saved but not covered. While never giving up, Fawcett jammed the puck home. Maine led 3-0 with exactly five minutes left.
Â
Fourth Goal (4-0 Maine): Nolan Renwick scored the final goal of the night after receiving a pass from
Justin Michaelian. Poisson, around the puck all night, started the odd man rush with a dump from the neutral zone. Renwick's goal gave Maine a 4-0 lead that would stand.
Â
Notes: Victor Ostman, recording his first career shutout, saved 33 shots in net for the Black Bears. Yaniv Perets recorded 30 saves between the pipes for Quinnipiac.
Â
Maine went 1 for 2 on the power play, as the Bobcats were 0-4 on its player advantages.
Â
Next: The two squads will finish the non-conference series tomorrow, Sunday, October 23. Puck drop for the finale is scheduled for 4:05 pm.
