Game Recap: Baseball |

Maine dominates Saturday Sweep of NJIT, win doubleheader by 24-3 margin

McKenney throws CG in game one, Lawlor and McDaniel homer in game two

UNION, N.J. - The University of Maine baseball program dominated their way to a Saturday sweep against NJIT, outsourcing their opponent by a combined score of 24-3 between the two games, securing the 3-1 series win.

Game one of the day featured a complete pitching performance from redshirt-junior Alex McKenney, who went the entire seven-inning game and allowed just two singles, sitting down the final eight batters he faced in a row. His one run allowed was unearned, and he struck out three against just one walk.

The offense clicked just as well for Maine, as every spot in the lineup reached base and seven of the nine recorded a hit. Quinn McDaniel led the way with his second career three-hit day, recording an RBI and two runs scored. Sean Lawlor and Colby Emmertz both had two RBI days, while Jake Marquez cleared the bases for three RBI with a double in the third inning.

Game two was nearly a carbon copy, as Maine got another stellar performance from the pitching staff and the lineup clicked up and down the order.

Matthew Pushard got the start on the mound and put forth four innings of two-hit baseball with seven strikeouts to earn the win. Tyler Nielsen continued to have a hot hand out of the bullpen, working three innings with five strikeouts and just one hit allowed. Marshall Smaracko and Leif Bigelow finished things off with an inning each, and Maine cruised to the 14-2 victory.

Sean Lawlor parked his second home run of the season on his way to a 3-5 day with three runs and three RBI. Quinn McDaniel matched him with his second career home run, as he went 2-4 with three RBI himself. Joe Bramanti continues to not miss baseballs, going 3-5 with three runs and a pair of RBI, and Ryan Turenne and Jake Rainess both had two RBI days themselves.

Maine committed just one error in 16 innings of baseball while recording 24 hits and striking out 16 batters against just four walks. The 10-1 and 14-2 wins were Maine's fourth and fifth wins this season with ten runs or more scored. The last Black Bears team to do it five or more times against DI opponents was the 2013 team, who did it six times on their way to 37 wins.

The win was the 2,000th all-time win in Maine Baseball history, as the Black Bears are the 82nd team to reach the milestone in Division I and the third in New England (Harvard, Yale).

Maine's overall record now sits at 11-8 overall and 6-5 within the conference. The Black Bears will return home for their next set, a Saturday and Sunday tilt against the Hartford Hawks at Mahaney.
