Jeremy Swayman and Head Coach Red Gendron Take New England Hockey Writers Men’s D-1 Top Honors

ORONO, Maine -- Junior goaltender Jeremy Swayman was named the Leonard Fowle New England MVP and head coach Red Gendron claimed the 2019-20 Clark Hodder New England Coach of the Year the New England Hockey Writers Association honors announced today.

Gendron was the Hockey East Coach of the Year this past season, and Swayman was one of the three Hobey Baker Award "Hat Trick" finalists, along with winning the Mike Richter Award as the top goaltender in the nation. Along with the MVP nod, Swayman found a spot on the Division I All-Stars.

Swayman, a fourth round draft pick of the Boston Bruins in 2017, finished his junior season at Maine with stellar numbers. He played in over 2,000 minutes and led the nation in saves with 1,099 also posting a 2.07 goals against average and his .939 save percentage was second in the nation. He faced 1,170 shots and allowed just 71 goals. He stopped more than 30 shots 25 times during the season, more than 40 twice and more than 50 (52) once.  Swayman is a Management major with a 3.38 GPA.

Gendron guided the Black Bears to their best Hockey East regular season finish since the 2011-12 season, claiming the fourth seed in the Hockey East Tournament with a 12-9-3 record in league play, and a 18-11-5 mark overall, across a 2019-20 season that will go down as one of the most competitive in Hockey East history. His team also boasted a 13-1-3 mark at home in Alfond Arena. Gendron coached a squad that had the third-stingiest team defense in Hockey East play and 10th in the country in 2019-20.
