Rematch of 2019 America East title game
Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team returns home to open America East conference play against Hartford in a rematch of last year's America East title game on Thursday, Jan. 2. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m., following the UMaine men's contest with Columbia. The Black Bears are 13-10 in America East openers dating back to the league's start in 1996-97. Maine is 39-3 at the Cross Insurance Center in its last 42 games against America East competition on its home floor. Maine has won 18 straight home games against America East foes with its last loss coming against Binghamton on Jan. 6, 2018.

Anne Simon set new career-highs in both points scored, 23, and rebounds, eight, in Maine's most recent setback, a 70-57 defeat on Monday evening at Drexel. Dor Saar added 12 points four rebounds and four assists in the loss.
Saar continues to lead Maine in scoring, ranking 15th among America East leaders in scoring, 10.8, and checking in fifth best at 4.1 assists per game. Saar, the America East active leader with 311, recently moved past Carrie Goodhue and into 10th on Maine's all-time assists list. Saar has registered double-digit scoring efforts in back-to-back games and three of her last four outings. The junior point guard has been a threat from beyond the arc, ranking fifth in the league at 32.4 percent from 3-point range and fourth with 2.4 makes from downtown per game. Simon has turned in double-figures in five of her last six, including a career-best 23 point showing at Drexel. Simon is averaging 14.5 points per game over her last six and has raised her scoring average from 5.5 to 9.4 over the run. Maeve Carroll is adding 7.5 points and leads the Black Bears in rebounding, ranking ninth in the league at 6.6 rebounds per game. Carroll has tallied six or more rebounds in each of her last five outings. Maddy McVicar has posted double-digits in three of her last four outings, raising her scoring average from 3.5 to 7.4. With a pair of free throws at Drexel, McVicar has stretched her streak of made free throws to 12 in a row. Kelly Fogarty, who has made two or more 3-point field goals in seven games this season, is shooting 33.3-percent from beyond the arc. Fogarty ranks seventh best among America East leaders in 3-point field goals made per game (1.7).
A LOOK AT HARTFORD:
A year removed from an appearance in the America East title game, the Hawks enter action winless at 0-13 on the season and 0-7 on the road. Hartford begins conference play with the 347th ranked offense, out of 348 Division I teams, averaging just 47.3 points per game. Defensively, Hartford is allowing 66.8 points per game and ranks 337th nationally with a -19.5 scoring differential. Hartford does defend the 3-point line well, checking in second in America East and 40th nationally with an opposing 3-point shooting percentage of 26.2. Turnovers have also been a struggle for the Hawks who rank last in America East and 334th nationally at 21.2 turnovers per game. Individually, Jada Lucas leads Hartford's offense at 12.1 points per game, good for ninth among America East leaders. Jordan McLemore is adding 9.5 points with a 35.7 percent showing from 3-point range. Carmen Villalobos leads Hartford in rebounding, pulling down 6.9 boards per game.
SERIES WITH HARTFORD:
Maine and Hartford will meet for the 79th time in history with the Black Bears holding a 49-29 advantage in the all-time series.
