Orono, Maine -- The University of Maine athletic department was saddened to learn of the passing of track & field alum, Myron Whipkey.
Whipkey was a member of the University of Maine track & field team from 1976-80. During his time with the Black Bears, Whipkey set the indoor school-record and captured a Maine State Series title with a time of 2:21.8 in the 1000m event in 1979-80. In 1977-78, Whipkey was a member of the Maine State Series championship two mile relay team, helping guide the team to a title time of 8:10.8. Whipkey also won the Maine State Series 1,000 yards title with a time of 2:14.4 in 1978-79. During the 1979 outdoor season, Whipkey set the school mark in the 800-yard event with a championship time of 1:52.9. During the 1977 outdoor season, Whipkey captured the Maine State Series individual title in the 880 yard run, this time completing the event in 1:57.3.
