Swayman and Pearson Earn End of Season Hockey East Honors

WAKFIELD, Mass. – The Hockey East Association announced Wednesday the 2017-18 Pro Ambitions All-Rookie Team as well as its 2017-18 all-star teams, as voted by the league's 11 head coaches. University of Maine freshman goaltender Jeremy Swayman was named to the All-Rookie squad and was joined on the All-Star Honorable Mention team by sophomore captain Chase Pearson.

Swayman finished the regular season with the league's third-best save percentage at .920, a number that placed him fourth nationally among rookie netminders and 17th overall, and had a 2.74 goals against average. His 13 regular season wins was third-best among freshman goaltenders. Swayman went 15-13-3 in his first season in Orono, earning the most wins by a Maine freshman goaltender since Ben Bishop went 21-8-2 in his rookie season. He had 17 games this year in which he made 30-plus saves, and made at least 30 saves in eight-straight games. Swayman earned his first career shutout with a 31-save outing on Jan. 6 at Boston University. In Maine's two-game set at Quinnipiac on Dec. 8 and 9, Swayman registered 50 saves in a 7-4 win on Friday and another 45 saves in a 5-3 win on Saturday for a weekend total of 95. It was the highest single-weekend save total for a Maine goaltender since current assistant coach Alfie Michaud made 93 saves (51, 42) in January 1998.

Swayman earned five weekly league awards during the regular season, the most in Hockey East, and added one in the playoffs while also earning Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Month for January. He is the only player this season to have earned at least one Rookie, Player and Defensive Player of the Week award.

Pearson finished his sophomore campaign with a career-high 27 points on seven goals and a career-best 20 assists. Pearson led the league in face-off wins during the regular season at 410, a number that tied for sixth in the country, and finished the 2017-18 season with 486, 93 more than the next closest conference player. His .549 winning percentage on draws was sixth-best in the conference among players with at least 200 taken. In Maine's final game of the season – a quarterfinal round playoff game at Providence on March 10 – Pearson won 33 face-offs.

From Jan. 20 to Feb. 9, Pearson put together a six-game point-streak, tallying four goals and three assists for seven points during that span. He had five multi-point outings on the season. Pearson finished second on the team in shots on goal with 105 and tied for second in forward blocks with 24.
