Men's Hockey Earns Tie Behind Tralmaks Two Goals, 3-3

BURLINGTON, Vermont - The University of Maine men's ice hockey team tied, 3-3, the University of Vermont Catamounts on Saturday evening at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.

The two goaltenders dominated the first period with Jeremy Swayman saving 13 shots and Stefanos Lekkas turning away 10 Maine shots. The Black Bears took the lone penalty of the period.

First Goal (Vermont 1-0): Liam Coughlin scored on an odd man rush and gave his team a 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the second period. Max Kaufman started the rush with a pass along the fair side boards. Alex Esposito grabbed the puck and fed an unmarked Coughlin. The forward scored on the open Maine net. Vermont held a 1-0 lead only 1:17 into the second period.

Second Goal (1-1): As Chase Pearson's shift was ending, he intercepted a Catamounts' pass. The junior led an attack accompanied by Patrick Shea and Brady Keeper. Pearson's shot was blocked by a Vermont defender. The blocked shot found its way to Shea, who waited behind the net for the play to develop. Keeper crashed the net and was rewarded with a pass. The defenseman did not waste his opportunity as he tied the game at one goal a piece.

Third Goal (2-1 Maine): At the start of the third period, Eduards Tralmaks punched home Maine's second goal of the contest. Tim Doherty grabbed the loose puck and looked to attack the net. The forward threw the puck towards the crease. Vermont's goaltender defended the original shot, but Tralmaks was there for the rebound. With traffic all around him, the sophomore managed to find the back of the net. Maine was up 2-1 in the early stages of the third period.

Fourth Goal (2-2): Vermont scored 00:30 after Maine grabbed a one goal lead. Joey Cippollone was left all alone next to the Black Bears' net. Max Kaufman found his line mate who tied the game for their Catamounts.

Fifth Goal (3-2 Maine): Less than two minutes of game play later, Mitchell Fossier and Sam Becker started a rush for Maine. Becker knew if he tossed the puck towards the Vermont net, someone from his squad would be there. Tralmaks was that someone. The forward went between the Catamount's goaltender's legs for his second goal of the Hockey East contest.

Sixth Goal (3-3): Owen Grant tied the contest for Vermont with, ultimately, the last goal of the game. The forward wired a shot from the top of the far side face-off circle. With all of the traffic in front of Maine's net, Swayman was not able to pick up the puck. Max Kaufman tipped the shot. Due to the deflection, Vermont tied the score with only 3:43 left in the game.

The two Hockey East foes failed to break the 3-3 tie in the five minute overtime period. Maine used their timeout with 00:08 left in the game but was unable to get a shot off. The Black Bears battled to their second tie of the 2018-19 season.

Notes:
  • Jeremy Swayman finished the game with 40 saves.
  • Maine went 0-4 on the power play, while they killed all three of Vermont's chances.
  • The Black Bears were able to win 31 face offs to the Catamounts 29 victories.

Next: The Black Bears will travel to Plymouth, Michigan to take on the U.S. National Development team on December 8th. Puck drop for the exhibition is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
