WAKEFIELD, Mass. - Hockey East announced Monday that University of Maine freshman goaltender
Jeremy Swayman has been named the league's Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week after he recorded a 31-save shutout in Saturday's 3-0 win at Boston University.
Â
The Anchorage, Alaska native was solid in the first two periods – including a big stop on Jordan Greenway on a breakaway - and stepped up in the third with 14 stops in the final frame. Additionally, six of Swayman's saves came with Maine on the penalty kill.
Â
Swayman's shutout, which was the first of his career, marked the fifth-ever shutout for the Black Bears in the 130-game series with the Terriers. The only other time a Maine freshman goaltender blanked BU was on Feb. 21, 1997, when now-assistant coach
Alfie Michaud made 20 saves in a 3-0 win at Alfond Arena.
Â
This is Swayman's third weekly honor of the season. He was named Player of the Week on Dec. 11 after a 95-save weekend in Maine's sweep of Quinnipiac and he was tabbed as Rookie of the Week on Nov. 20 after a 40-save performance in Maine's 5-2 win over BU. In November, Swayman was the Rookie of the Month runner-up and was the Goaltender of the Month runner-up in December. He currently sits sixth in the nation with a .932 save percentage and is 8-4-1 overall and 5-0-1 in his last six starts.
Â
This is Maine's third Rookie of the Week honor of the season, with
Brady Keeper (Jan. 2) and
Eduards Tralmaks (Nov. 6) also earning the award. Additionally, Defenseman
Patrick Holway was named the Hockey East Player of the Month for December while forward
Tim Doherty was tabbed as the league's Rookie of the Month.
The Black Bears close out non-conference play tonight at Brown University. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m.
