Black Bears score their tenth win of the season

Bangor, Maine -- Blanca Millan tallied her fourth double-double of the season as the University of Maine women's basketball team defeated visiting Vermont, 64-55 on Monday afternoon at the Cross Insurance Center.

Millan finished the contest with a game-high 23 points to go along with 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals. The point total marked the seventh time this season in which Millan has tallied 20+ as well as her 17th consecutive contest record double-digits.

Tanesha Sutton added 15 points and five rebounds while Dor Saar chipped in 11 points on a perfect 4-for-4 shooting day.

The Black Bears were impressive taking care of the ball as they turned it over just four times. Dating back to the 1999-2000 season, the turnover total was the lowest for the Black Bears. Maine also turned the ball over just five times against Vermont back on 2015, its previous low over the 19 year period entering the contest.

Maine also continued its strong rebounding trend as it pulled down 35 total boards, 15 of which coming on the offensive end which helped lead Maine to a 19-9 advantage in second chance points.

The Black Bears, who led 14-12 after the first quarter, were able to outscored Vermont 19-13 in the second period on 8-of-15 shooting.

Tied at 14 early in the second, Maine responded to a Vermont bucket with a 14-2 run. Three-point field goals from Parise Rossignol and Millan started the sprint which was helped by three Vermont turnovers.

The Catamounts answered with a 7-0 run of their own before Millan knocked down another triple. A late bucket from Fanny Wadling gave the Black Bears a 33-25 advantage at the half.

Vermont cut the lead to five early in the second half when Hanna Crymble's layup made it 35-30. However, Maine dashed out to a 14-6 run as Sutton's jumped with 1:35 to play in the period gave the Black Bears their largest lead of the day, 49-36.

The lead would not sink below nine and ended with the Black Bears moving to 2-2 in league play thanks to a 64-55 victory.

Maine continues America East action on Thursday when it travels to meet Hartford who is tied for tops in the conference at 4-1. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
