Women's Hockey Opens up Season Hosting Quinnipiac

ORONO, Maine - The University of Maine women's ice hockey team will be hosting Quinnipiac for a two-game series opener this weekend, Sept. 29Â and 30, to kick off their 2017-18 season. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m. at the Alfond Arena on Friday night, then back on the ice the next day for a 3 p.m. puck drop.Â
A LOOK AT MAINE
The Black Bears brought in a young roster this season with eight new faces and 17 returners consisting of 10 sophomores and only two juniors and five seniors. Maine will be coming off a 9-0 win over the HTI Stars after playing an exhibition game on Friday, September 22. Leading scorers were sophomore Vendula Pribylova and freshman Michelle Weiss, both contributing two goals and two assists apiece. Tereza Vanisova (three assists), Kristin Gilmour (one assist), Alyson Matteau (one assist), Brittany Colton, and Brooke Stacey each put away a goal of their own. Goalkeepers, Carly Jackson and Jillian Flynn split the time in net. Maine displayed an impenetrable defense in the first period, allowing a mere two shots to slip through for Jackson to save adding on one more save in the beginning of the second period. Flynn finished out the remainder of the second period stopping six shots along with eight more saves in the third to finalize the shutout.
Maine finished out the season last year 10-21-1 with a 6-17-1 conference record. Captain of the Black Bears this year is junior Alyson Matteau who finished out the 2016-17 season tallying 18 points, third most on her team. Assistant captains are senior Brooke Stacey and junior Cailey Hutchison. Starting goalie from last season, Jackson, will return with an impressive 720 saves in 27 games. Head Coach Richard Reichenbach returns for his fourth season leading the Black Bears on the ice.Â

Quinnipiac closed out their 2016-17 season with an overall record of 21-10-6 and went 13-6-3 in the ECAC. The Bobcats welcomed seven freshmen and 17 returners. As a team, they put away 94 goals, led by senior Taylar Cianfarano with 13 goals plus 13 assists. Emma Woods and Meghan Turner contributed 12 goals apiece. Returning in net is sophomore Abby Vies who saw playing time in six games last year, accumulating 58 saves.Â
