Swimming and Diving Set for Season Opener against URI Saturday

ORONO, Maine – The Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams will open up the 2017-18 against the University of Rhode Island in the friendly confines of Stanley M. Wallace Pool on Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. Following the meet fans will have the opportunity to meet the team and get autographs as part of the Meet the Black Bears series presented by Domino's!
Last season, the women's team placed fourth at the America East Championships, while the men's squad took 11th out of 18 schools at the ECAC Championships to end their respective seasons.
The men's squad returns three-fourths of the Black Bears' 400 medley relay team that broke a school record at the ECAC's in Connor Mayhew, Calvin Cleworth, and Kevin Clyne with a time of 3:25.79.
Diver Kyle Adams returns for his sophomore season in 2017-18. Adams finished third overall in the 3-meter dive with a score of 225.95 last season at ECAC's, and also finished sixth in the 1-meter dive with a score of 225.85.
On the women's side, the team returns several talented swimmers such as Emily Borger, who broke a new school-record in the 100-yd backstroke with a time of 57.34 on day three of the of the America East Swimming Championships last.
Last season against Rhode Island at the Tootell Aquatic Center in Kingston, the Maine men's team defeated URI 184-68, while the Black Bear women's team fell to URI 171.5-124.5.
The Maine men's team placed first every event, except for the 200 IM and the 200 Free, while the women's squad won the 200 Medley Relay, the 200 Free, 50 Free, 100 Free, the 200 IM, and the 200 Free Relay.
The Black Bears return to the Stanley M. Wallace Pool next Saturday against Dartmouth in the final home dual meet of the season. The meet is set for Saturday morning against the Big Green at 11:00 a.m.
