Domingo's Goal Not Enough For Black Bears in Loss at UAlbany

ALBANY, N.Y. – Sophomore Priscilla Domingo scored her second goal of the season and the Black Bears tried mightily to comeback from an early deficit, but the University of Maine soccer team dropped a 4-1 America East decision on Sunday at UAlbany.

The Black Bears (4-9-1, 2-4-0 AE) found themselves in an early two-goal deficit after Mariah Williams found the back of the net twice in three minutes for the Great Danes (5-10-1, 3-3-1 AE).

But from the Williams goal in the 12th-minute onwards, UMaine began to test Andrea Leitner from distance and put together some passing pieces to gain momentum. Mikayla Morin forced Leitner to make a diving save and Jane Stevens made her make a jumping grab a few minutes later. Sandwiched in between those attempts was Nicole Bailey's point-blank shot off a corner kick that bounced off the keeper and out.

Just when it seemed the Black Bears were going to head into the half, Morin connected with Domingo on a free kick to pull within one at the break.

With the tone reset, the Black Bears came out with tenacity in the second half. Domingo nearly pulled the Black Bears even seven minutes in when Kaitlyn Ball turn on her defender and fed a ball across to the right post – but her classmate could not quite connect.

In the final minutes of the game, Morin fed a ball into the box for a hard-charging Bailey but Leitner stifled the attack before Bailey could connect. Samantha Cobotic did well throughout the second half to track UAlbany's attempts from distance but unfortunately, the Great Danes would be the only team finding the net in the second half, with Williams completing her hat-trick in the 81st-minute to stifle the UMaine comeback. UAlbany would ice the game with a header goal five minutes later.

Cobotic finished with four saves for the Black Bears while Leitner had two for the Great Danes. UAlbany had the final edge in shots (14-8) and shots on goal (8-3). Emilie Andersen led UMaine with three shots.

Goal Recaps
• (UAlbany 9') Mariah Williams broke through the defense on the left, took a cut and put the ball far side into the net.
• (UAlbany 12') Williams turned with the ball 25 yards out from goal and struck it past an outstretched Cobotic inside the right post.
• (Maine 44') With the ball set up near the 25-yard line, Morin threaded a ball between the three-player UAlbany wall and the rest of the players set up on the 10-yard line. Domingo was able to curl off her defender, receive the ball near the top of the box, take a touch and then fire a ball inside the right post as she fell down.
• (UAlbany 81') Cutting towards the right side of the field, Wiliams squeezed a shot off by a defender and past a charging Cobotic.
• (UAlbany 86') Katie Gowing lofted a ball towards the right side of the box and Miranda Badovinac headed it high and over the top of the defense into the net.

Notes
• The Black Bears still hold an edge of 10-5-1 in the all-time series with the Great Danes.
• Morin is now tied for second on the team in points with five on two goals and one assist.
• Domingo now has four points on the year with two goals.
