Maine Baseball Falls to UMass 5-3

AUBURNDALE, Florida -- Maine baseball falls to UMass 5-3, Friday afternoon at Mickey Etherton Field.
Maine falls to 5-13 overall on the season and UMass improves their record to 2-7.
John Arel started for the Black Bears and went six innings, giving up seven hits and allowing four runs to go along with two walks and eight strikeouts. Brett Chappell and Danny Casals led Maine hitters with two hits each on the day.
Ryan Moloney started on the mound for the Minutemen and pitched seven and two-third innings, giving up six hits and allowing three runs, two earned, along with one walk and two strikeouts.
In the top of the first, Dylan Morris hit a two run home run to right field to give the Minutemen a 2-0 lead.
The Black Bears responded in the bottom of the first, Tyler Schwanz hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Danny Casals to cut the lead 2-1. Later, Kevin Stypulkowski reached base by way of a fielder's choice and Jeremy Pena reached third as a throw from the UMass second baseman went wide, Pena scored to tie the game a 2-2.
The Minutemen in the top of the sixth, scored two runs. Cooper Mrowka doubled down the left field line scoring one giving UMass a 3-2 advantage. Jon Avallone reached on a fielder's choice scoring Mrowka to give the Minutemen a 4-2 lead.
Jake Marks entered the game for Arel in the top of the seventh. UMass' Hunter Carey singled to center field scoring John Jennings to increase the Massachusetts open the game to 5-2.
Brett Chappell singled to center field in the bottom of the eighth scoring Danny Casals to bring the score to 5-3, UMass.
Evan Mackintosh came on in relief for the Minutemen replacing Moloney, for the save opportunity. Mackintosh recorded the final four outs to record the save.
Maine returns to action tomorrow as they square off against Dartmouth for a 3:00 p.m. start time.
