Maine Baseball Drops Doubleheader Against New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- The University of Maine Baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader against New Mexico State Saturday. In game one, the Black Bears fell 7-3 and in game two New Mexico State defeated Maine 3-2.
Jeff Gelinas started on the mound for Maine and Matthew McHugh started for New Mexico State.
In game one, Maine struck first with a run in the top of the first after a Tyler Schwanz strikeout, Jeremy Pena tried to steal second and was thrown out. Danny Casals scored from third and gave the Black Bears a 1-0 lead.
New Mexico State responded in the bottom half of the inning first with a sacrifice fly to right field from Dan Hetzel that scored L.J. Hatch to tie the game 1-1. Joseph Koerper singled up the middle driving in two Aggies to take a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom of the second, New Mexico State scored four more runs. Austin Botello singled to right center driving in two. Then, Dan Hetzel doubled down the left field line driving in Trey Stine. Tommy Bell then sacrificed flied to center driving in Botello to give the Aggies a 7-1 advantage.
In the top of the third, Tyler Schwanz hit his second home run of the season to left center and his second RBI of the day to bring the score 7-2 New Mexico State.
John Arel came in relief and pitched six and two thirds innings allowing no runs, five hits and striking out nine.
Jake Osborne homered to left field for his first home run of the season and brought the score 7-3 Aggies.
New Mexico State's bullpen held Maine scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings to claim game one 7-3.
Matt McHugh earned the win pitching 5.2 innings striking out five and Jeff Gelinas picked up the loss.

In game two, Jonah Normandeau started on the mound for Maine and Marcel Renteria started for New Mexico State.
Both teams were scoreless through four innings of play.
In the top of the fifth, Brenden Geary grounded out to short scoring Brett Chappell to give Maine a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning Jonathan Salcedo singled to left field driving in Kevin Stypulkowski to give the Black Bears a 2-0 advantage.
New Mexico State in the bottom half of the frame, scored their first run after a bases loaded walk to trim Maine's lead 2-1. L.J. Hatch grounded out to second and scored Trey Stine to tie the game at 2-2.
In the bottom of the seventh, New Mexico State's Mason Fishback reached on a fielder's choice that scored the game winning run as the Aggies walked off in the seven inning shortened second game of the double header 3-2.
Brett Worthen picked up the win for New Mexico State and Charlie Butler received the loss.
The Black Bears return to action tomorrow as they play the fourth game of the series against the Aggies, first pitch is at 3:00 p.m. eastern time.
