
Maine Baseball Wins Against New Mexico State, 13-3

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico -- The University of Maine Baseball team wins against New Mexico State 13-3 Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Maine is now 3-4 on the season while New Mexico State falls to 5-2 overall.
Jeremy Peña went 3 for 6 on the day with two doubles and Tyler Schwanz, Brett Chappell and Kevin Stypulkowski had two RBI's each.
Nick Silva had a great day on the mound appearing in relief and went four and two-thirds innings, giving up only three hits, striking out three and not allowing a run.
Chris Murphy started on the mound for the Black Bears and Dalton Shalberg started for the Aggies.
Maine opened with the first run of the game in the top of the first off of a Tyler Schwanz single through the right side, to drive in Jeremy Peña for a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Brett Chappell hit a sacrifice fly to center scoring Danny Casals increasing Maine's lead 2-0.
In the bottom of the third, New Mexico State rallied with three runs on two hits. Dan Hetzel walked with the bases loaded driving in the first Aggie run, trimming the lead 2-1. Then, Trey Stine doubled down the left field line driving in two, giving New Mexico State a 3-2 advantage. Nick Silva replaced Chris Murphy on the mound for the Black Bears.
The Black Bears tied the game in the top of the fourth, Colin Ridley hit a sacrifice fly to center driving in Stypulkowski to bring the score 3-3. Jake Osborne later singled to left driving in Brenden Geary as Maine regained the lead 4-3.
In the top of the fifth, Brett Chappell singled to short scoring Danny Casals to increase Maine's lead 5-3.
Maine exploded with four runs in the top of the sixth. Schwanz singled to center scoring Jeremy Peña for a 6-3 lead. Casals then scored off of a wild pitch to give Maine a 7-3 advantage. Then, Stypulkowski singled to left scoring Chappell and Schwanz to give the Black Bears an 9-3 lead.
Jeremy Peña doubled to right center in the top of the seventh scoring Osborne and giving Maine a commanding 10-3 lead.
In the top of the eighth, Alex Cabrera reached base on a fielder's choice scoring Chappell bringing the score to 11-3. Later, Stypulkowski scored on a balk increasing Maine's total 12-3.
In the bottom of the eighth Eddie Emerson replaced Silva on the mound for Maine.
Stypulkowski in the top of the ninth grounded out to third scoring Casals and giving Maine a 13-3 lead.
Connor Johnson came on in relief for the ninth striking out two and walking one.
Nick Silva (1-0) earns the win and Dalton Shalberg (0-1) receives the loss.
Maine returns to action this Friday as they play a double header with the first game against St. Bonaventure and the second against North Dakota State. First game begins at 11:00 a.m.
