Maine Baseball Travels to New Mexico State for a Four Game Series

Scouting the Black Bears
Maine continues on the road with a four game series against New Mexico State. The Black Bears as a team are batting .252 with nine RBI's and a .319 on-base percentage. Kevin Stypulkowski leads the team with a .364 batting average. Tyler Schwanz hit the first home run of the season in their last game against Clemson, he also leads the team in RBI's with three.
Justin Courtney appeared in the first game of the year, pitching five innings, striking out eight and didn't allow an earned run. He picked up the no-decision but help the Black Bears earn the win. Logan Fullmer came on in the ninth to pick up the save, he struck out two.
Maine Defeats Clemson, 4-3
CLEMSON, S.C. -- Starting pitcher Justin Courtney struck out eight and Brett Chappell drove in a pair to help lead the University of Maine baseball team to a 4-3 season-opening win over Clemson.
Courtney picked up the no-decision after going 5.0 innings and giving up three runs, none earned, while fanning eight and walking a pair.
Chappell and designated hitter Kevin Stypulkowski each added a pair of hits to lead the offense. Chappell drove in two while Stypulkowski added a double and scored a run. Chappell's triple, which was lost by the Clemson outfielders, plated Jeremy Pena in the seventh with what proved to be the game-winning run.
The bullpen tandem of Connor Johnson, Charlie Butler and Logan Fullmer combined for four innings of one-hit, shutout ball. Johnson picked up the win while Fullmer, who struck out two in his inning of work, nabbed the save.
Courtney and Casals Earn America East Honors
The University of Maine Baseball team's Justin Courtney and Danny Casals received America East weekly awards.
Courtney earned pitcher of the week after pitching five innings, allowing no earned runs and had eight strike outs against Clemson. He held Clemson batters to a .150 average and earned the no-decision as Maine defeated the Tigers 4-3.
Casals earned rookie of the week after posting a .333 average, along with a .467 on-base percentage over three games with 12 plate appearances. Casals earned his first career hit with the Black Bears in game one of the series against Clemson.
Scouting the Aggies
New Mexico State is coming off of sweeping a three game series against Towson. As a team the Aggies have an overall batting average of .410 to go along with a .485 on-base percentage. They also showed power, hitting five home runs.
Aggie pitchers had a 2.00 ERA and compiled 27 strikeouts. They held Towson hitters to a .283 average.
Daniel Johnson leads New Mexico State with six hits on the season, he is also driving in eight RBI's, which also leads the team.
