Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Stony Brook on Friday Afternoon

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Stony Brook on Friday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono. The Black Bears fell in the first game 8-5 in 13 innings before dropping the nightcap 3-1.
Maine falls to 9-17 on the season with the losses and 1-4 in America East play. Stony Brook improves to 12-11 overall, 6-2 in America East action.
In the first game, Maine took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. The Black Bears had runners on first and second and Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) singled to left center field scoring Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla.) from second base. Brenden Geary (South Hadley, Mass.) moved to third on the play. Geary scored when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled to center.
Maine extended its lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) doubled and scored when Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly.
The Seawolves got on the board in the top of the fifth inning. Andruw Gazzola singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, third on a balk and scored on a ground out.
Maine added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Stypulkowski doubled and scored when Doran reached on a fielder's choice.
Stony Brook added a pair in the top of the seventh inning. Gazzola reached on a fielder's choice and scored on an error. Bobby Honeyman scored the second run of the inning to make it a 4-3 game. The Seawolves tied the game in the top of the eighth when Tobi Handley singled and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Johnny Caputo.
Stony Brook took the lead in the top of the 12th inning. Tobi Handley tripled to right field and scored on a fielder's choice.
Maine tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Heath doubled and scored when Chappell doubled.
Stony Brook won the game with three runs in the top of the 13th inning. Bobby Honeyman singled and Peragine drew a walk. Honeyman scored when Handley singled. Parenty drove in both Peragine and Handley with a double.
Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine) got the start for Maine and went 6.2 innings. He allowed three runs, just one of which was earned, on seven hits while striking out three. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) went 5.1 innings and allowed two runs on nine hits. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) went the final inning and allowed three runs on four hits to suffer the loss. He falls to 1-3 on the season.
Tyler Honahan got the start for the Seawolves and went five innings. He allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out four. Chad Lee replaced Honahan. Lee went two innings and allowed a run on two hits. Ryley MacEachern pitched a scoreless eighth inning Teddy Rodliff went five innings in relief to earn the win and improve to 1-0 on the season. He allowed one run on five hits.
In the second game, Maine took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Balzano singled to left field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Heath.
Stony Brook knotted the score at one in the top of the second inning. Rob Chavarria doubled, advanced on an error and scored when Caputo singled.
The Seawolves took the lead in the fourth inning when Chavarria walked and scored when Malcolm Nachmanoff singled. Stony Brook added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning. Peragine singled and scored when Handley tripled to right field.
Scott Heath pitched the complete game for the Black Bears and allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out four. He falls to 3-3 on the season.
Kevin Kernan went four innings and allowed one run on four hits. He improves to 2-0 on the season. Cameron Stone went the final three innings for Stony Brook to earn the save. He struck out eight batters in three innings.
