Big Innings Lead Baseball Past UMaine Farmington 14-3

ORONO, Maine- The University of Maine Baseball team earned a 14-3 win against Maine-Farmington on Tuesday. Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) led the Maine offense as he went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) also had three hits in the win for the Black Bears.
Maine improves to 16-22, while UMaine Farmington falls to 17-18.
Maine scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, sending 10 players up to bat. Steven Adam (Tecumesh, Ontario) doubled to start off. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) followed with a single to right field. Brett Chappell (Rock Falls, Ill.) had a double to left field, driving home Adam for the first run of the night and his 30th RBI of the season. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) and Brian Doran(Ayr, Ontario) both singled, Doran with his 20th RBI for of the season, and Heath scored the second run of the game. Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Florida) had a sacrifice fly for Chappell to score the third run. Danny Diaz (Miami, Florida) then singled to center field, with Doran and Morrill scoring the fourth and fifth runs, respectively.
To begin the second inning for the Black Bears, Adam was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored the sixth run of the game on a double from Chappell.
For UMaine Farmington in the fourth inning, two runs were scored on a double from Jimmy Neal, and Grayson Beressi scored another run on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Croteau.
Maine scored four runs during the bottom of the fourth inning, to increase its lead to 10-3. Adam started the inning by singling to right field. Heath then singled to left field, allowing Adam to advance to second. Chappell had a bunt single, which allowed both Heath and Adam to advance to second and third, respectively. On a sacrifice fly from Morrill, Adam scored the first run of the inning and the seventh run for the Black Bears. Chappell then advanced to third, while Heath was able to score on a wild pitch. Stypulkowski reached on an error, to earn his 14th RBI of the season with Chappell scoring a run. Doran then scored another run, when Stypulkowski was caught stealing. The Black Bears ended the fourth inning with a six run lead over Hartford.
In the bottom of the sixth, Maine added to its lead by scoring four runs. Luke Morrill went to first on a walk, and advanced to third on a double by Doran. Morrill then scored on a wild pitch, while Doran advanced to third and Stypulkowski walked. Diaz singled to center field plating Doran with the second run of the inning. Stypulkowski scored when Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) reached on an error. Christian Garabedian (Miami, Fla.), who pinch ran for Diaz, scored when Adam drew a bases loaded walk.
Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) got the start for Maine and went five innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four. He improves to 2-4 on the season. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) entered the game in the top of the sixth for the Black Bears. Butler went two innings and allowed just two hits. Chris Piteo (Middle Village, N.Y.) entered the game for the final two innings, earning two strikeouts without allowing a hit.
Nate Pushard got the start for UMaine Farmington and allowed 10 runs on 13 hits over 3.1 innings. He suffered the loss and falls to 2-2. He was one of five pitchers in the game for the Beavers.
Maine returns to action on Thursday, April 30th with a game at Lafayette. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
