Baseball Drops Rubber Game Against UMBC

Baltimore, Md. -- The University of Maine's Baseball team dropped the rubber game against UMBC on Sunday 6-3.
With the loss today, Maine drops to 15-22 overall and 5-9 in America East play. While UMBC improves their record to 20-16 and 7-8 in America East play.
The Maine offense was able to produce 10 total hits including home runs from Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) and Danny Diaz (Miami, Fla.) for their second and first of the season respectively.
The first four innings of the game were scoreless, the Black Bears were able to break through for the first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning on a Danny Diaz home run for a 1-0 lead.
UMBC was able to quickly respond in the bottom half of the inning, striking on four hits and driving in three runs for a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth Morrill lead off the inning with a solo home run to left field to give the Black Bears another run to bring the game to 3-2. Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla.) then doubled to right center and was pinch run for by Jake Osborne (Burlington, Ontario) who then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at three.
In the bottom of the eighth the Retrievers hit a single, a triple and a home run to total three innings and take a 6-3 lead. Cory Callahan pitched the final 3.2 innings of shut out baseball to preserve the win.
Maine returns to action on April 28 against the University of Maine-Farmington at Mahaney Diamond with a 5 p.m. start time.
