Baseball Falls to #2 Florida 5-0

GAINESVILLE, Fla.-- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 5-0 decision at second-ranked Florida on Friday night in Gainesville, Fla. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) led the Black Bear offense with a pair of hits.
The Gators scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Christian Hicks reached on an error and Logan Browning followed and reached on a fielder's choice, while Hicks was safe at second on an error. Dalton Guthrie singled to load the bases. Hicks scored when Buddy Reed singled to shortstop. Harrison Bader singled through the left side and Browning scored. Richie Martin reached on an error and Guthrie scored. Reed scored the fourth run of the inning when JJ Schwarz hit a sacrifice fly.
The Gators added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a solo home run by Hicks.
Florida finished the game with an 8-6 edge in hits.
Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears and allowed four runs, none of which were earned, on five hits over three innings. He picks up the loss for the Black Bears and falls to 0-4. Jacob Gosselin-Deschesnes (Montreal, Quebec) went five innings in relief and allowed just one run on three hits.
Logan Shore scattered five hits over eight innings for Florida and improves to 3-0. Eric Hanhold pitched a scoreless ninth for the Gators.
The two teams play game two of their series on Saturday, March 7. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM.
