Doran Leads Black Bears, But Baseball Drops Season-Opener

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) had three hits, but the University of Maine baseball team fell to the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee 10-0 in the season-opener on Friday afternoon.
UMW struck first with an unearned run in the top of the second inning. The Panthers then plated three runs in the top of the third inning. Tyler Hermann had the big hit in the inning, plating a pair of runs with a single to right field. Luke Meeter and Derek Peake each scored on the play. The team added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Tell Taylor doubled and scored, while Eric Solberg reached on an error and then scored.
Nick Unes singled and scored in the top of the fifth inning to push the UMW lead to 7-0. Sam Koenig had a two-run single in the top of the sixth, while Unes drove home a run on a sacrifice fly.
Jeff Gelinas (Saco, Maine) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went 3.1 innings and allowed six runs, four of which were earned, on six hits. He falls to 0-1 on the season. Chris Piteo (Middle Village, N.Y.) replaced Gelinas and went 2.2 innings. He allowed four runs, two of which were earned, on six hits. Connor Johnson (Taunton, Mass.) pitched a scoreless seventh inning in his collegiate debut. John Arel (Burlington, Conn.) pitched a pair of scoreless innings in his first collegiate game.
Brian Keller went six innings, allowing just four hits, to earn the win for the Panthers.
The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 14. First pitch is schedule for 12 noon.
