Men's Basketball Drops 79-69 Decision to Dartmouth

BANGOR, Maine -- Freshman guard Ryan Bernstein filled the stat line for the Black Bears, totaling 13 points, eight assists and six rebounds on a night where Maine came up short, dropping a 79-69 decision to visiting Dartmouth on Wednesday evening.
Fellow freshman Lavar Harewood added 12 points while Devine Eke and Kevin Little each notched 10. Eke finished with a team-high seven rebounds and tallied double-digits in scoring for the fourth-straight game. Bernstein's eight assists are a single-game season-high for the Black Bears and the most by a single player since Aaron Calixte's nine last season against UMass Lowell (1/13/15).
Maine finished the contest 29-for-71 from the floor (40.8%) while Dartmouth went 27-for-55, checking in at 49.1% from the field.
Dartmouth was able to build an early lead, carrying a 14-8 advantage, 7:34 into the first half. The Black Bears answered with a 9-0 rush. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Harewood started the sprint before Garet Beal's make from behind the arc gave the Black Bears their first lead, 17-14, at the midway point.
The Big Green responded, racing their lead back up to nine and taking a 42-33 edge into halftime.
Dartmouth's offense continued clicking early in the second half, racing its lead up to 20 with 10:28 to play.
Maine began to chip away, using a 10-2 run to cut the advantage back down to 12. Lawton, Beal and Bernstein connected on buckets on consecutive possessions for the Black Bears. Following a Dartmouth make, Walter King found the scoring column with a jumper before two free throws by Lawton brought the Black Bears within 12 with 7:20 to play.
A 6-0 Dartmouth sprint swelled the lead, putting an end to Maine's comeback for the time being.
However, trailing by 18, Maine again found its offense with a 6-0 run bringing it back within 12. A late 3-pointer from Harewood with under 30-seconds remaining cut the lead to 10 but it would be too little too late as Dartmouth captured a 79-69 victory.
The Black Bears are back in action on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 5 p.m. at Boston College live on ESPN3.
