Early Lead Washed Away for Women's Basketball at Northeastern

BOSTON, Mass. -- It was a tale of two halves for the University of Maine women's basketball team on Friday afternoon at Northeastern. The Black Bears, who led by 12 in the first half, were outscored 36-21 over the final 20-minutes as they fell by a final of 56-44 to the Huskies.
Sigi Koizar was the high-scorer for the Black Bears, scoring 12 of her 16 points in the first quarter. For Koizar, it was the ninth time this season that she's posted double-digits. Bella Swan chipped in 10 points for Maine with a team-high six rebounds.
Maine finished the game 19-for-51 from the floor (37%), hitting 6-of-21 from 3-point range. The Black Bears did not attempt a free throw. Northeastern went 21-for-43 from the field (49%), also knocking down six 3-pointers, while going 8-for-11 from the free throw line. The Huskies were 14-for-25 from the floor in the second half.
Koizar and Maine started hot as the junior guard ripped off the first 12 points for Maine, giving the Black Bears a 12-4 advantage with 4:05 left in the first.
Northeastern closed to within three following a 7-0 run, cutting the Maine advantage to 14-11 early in the second quarter.
The Black Bears answered with a 9-0 sprint after a pair of lay-ups from Swan and 3-pointer by Bodine stretched the lead to 12 with 6:56 left in the half.
Maine would not score again in the half and Northeastern was able to close back to within three, 23-20, at the break.
A 3-pointer by Mikaela Gustafsson as the shot clock hit zero ended Maine's drought, 58-seconds into the third quarter.
However, Northeastern was able to reel off seven-straight points to snatch a 27-26 lead.
The lead changed five more times over the next two-minutes before Northeastern pulled away on an 18-0.
Bodine's 3-pointer with 7:30 left in the fourth ended another seven minute scoring drought for Maine. Lay-ups from Swan and Koizar brought Maine back within 10 but that would be as close as the Black Bears would get, falling to Northeastern 56-44.
Maine continues non-conference action on Sunday, Dec. 6 when it travels to take on Dartmouth. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
