Women's Basketball Closes Exhibition Series with 77-58 Win Over Stonehill

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team used its high-paced offense early to take a 49-34 lead into halftime before closing out a 77-58 exhibition victory over visiting Stonehill on Sunday afternoon.
Sophie Weckstrom finished with 22 points after going 7-for-8 from the field, including a 6-for-7 showing from 3-point range. Sigi Koizar added 14 points and six assists while Liz Wood lit up the stat line with nine points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.
The Black Bears were hot from the field in the first half as they went 20-for-31 (64.5%) and hit nine of 13 from beyond the arc. Maine closed the game 29-for-52 (55.8%) with 21 assists. Defensively, the Black Bears turned 12 Stonehill turnovers into 26 points.
Maine raced out of the gate as back-to-back 3-pointers from Weckstrom and Koizar gave it an early 11-point edge just 4:47 into the first quarter.
Stonehill cut the Black Bears' lead back down to three in the second quarter but Maine was able to close the half on a 16-4 run, eight points coming from Weckstrom, take take a 49-34 lead to the break.
The lead would not fall below double-digits the rest of the way as the offense kept clicking through the second half. Maine captured its largest lead of the game with 4:43 to play when Chantel Charles' 3-pointer gave it a 19-point advantage. The Black Bears would hang on to their healthy lead, taking the exhibition 77-58.
Maine opens the 2015-16 regular season on Friday, Nov. 13 when it travels to battle Harvard at 5:30 p.m.
