Koizar Leads Women's Hoops Past Harvard in Season Opener

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Sigi Koizar picked up right where she left off last season, tallying a game-high 22 points to lead the University of Maine women's basketball team to a 64-53 victory over Harvard.
Mikaela Gustafsson and Chantel Charles each added 12 points, tallying six and five rebounds respectively. Liz Wood filled out her stat line with seven assists to go along with five points, six boards and four steals.
Maine went 24-for-53 from the floor, hitting 31.6% from 3-point range (6-fo-19) and cashing in on 10 of 13 free throws. The Black Bears held a 34-29 edge in rebounding and scored 17 points off 17 Crimson turnovers.
Maine carried a slim 11-10 after one quarter before opening things up a bit in the second. The Black Bears, who outscored Harvard 20-12 in the period, used a 12-0 run to take its largest lead of the half. Koizar streaked to seven-straight points on her own before a jumper from Gustafsson gave the Black Bears a 31-19 lead with 1:44 left in the half.
Maine kept rolling in the third quarter, scoring the first seven points of the half to run its lead out to 16 following a 3-pointer from Koizar.
The Black Bears maintained their double-digit lead after three quarters but a 5-0 run to start the fourth from the Crimson cut the Maine lead to seven. The Black Bears were able to rebuild their lead to double-figures as Harvard wouldn't get any closer than nine the rest of the way. Koizar's late free throws secured the win as Maine took a season-opening 64-53 victory.
Maine continues action on Sunday when it travels to meet Boston College at 1 p.m.
