Women's Basketball Defeats Vanguard 70-55 in Exhibition Action

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team began competition with a 70-55 exhibition victory over Vanguard University on Friday evening in a neutral site contest at the University of Southern Maine.
Sigi Koizar and Liz Wood led Maine as each eclipsed the 20-point plateau with 21 and 20 points, respectively. Wood finished the contest 7-for-11 from the floor with four rebounds and four assists while Koizar went 8-for-13, 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, with a pair of assists.
As a whole, the Black Bears shot 46.3 percent, hit 13 of 26 attempts from 3-point range and added 19 assists on 25 makes.
Maine built its largest lead of the first half after putting together a 7-2 run, capped on a 3-pointer from Koizar, to extend its lead out to 29-16 with 6:37 left in the second quarter.
The third quarter proved to be a distancing stretch for the Black Bears as they outscored Vanguard 23-12 in the period. A 9-2 run in the third propelled Maine to its largest lead of the game when Chantel Charles' 3-point make put the Black Bears on top by 23 with under four minutes to play in the quarter.
Vanguard continued to chip away, cutting the Maine advantage down to eight late in the fourth quarter. However, a late surge from the Black Bears, headlined by five-straight points down the stretch from Sheraton Jones, sealed a 70-55 victory for the hosts.
Maine continues exhibition action on Sunday, Nov. 8 when it hosts Stonehill at the Cross Insurance Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
