Women's Basketball Defeats LSU, Finishes Fifth at Gulf Coast Showcase

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team limited Louisiana State to its lowest point total of the year and a 27% field goal mark as the Black Bears defeated LSU 52-41 in the fifth place game of the Gulf Coast Showcase.
Chantel Charles scored a game-high 14 points and Liz Wood added 12 points and nine rebounds. Mikaela Gustafsson and Sigi Koizar each tallied nine points for the Black Bears who went 20-for-36 (56%) from the field as a team.
LSU scored the first five points of the game but would not lead again. Lauren Bodine closed the first quarter with a trey and Charles started the second with one of her own to give Maine a six-point edge.
The Black Bears outscored LSU 18-7 in the second quarter, closing the final seven minutes of the period on a 15-4 run, to carry a 30-16 lead into the halftime break.
The Tigers chipped Maine's lead down to 12 but jumpers from Gustafsson and Charles ran the Black Bears' advantage back up to 16, its largest lead of the game, late in the third quarter.
LSU continued to cut into Maine's lead as it was able to get within eight but that would be as close as it would get. The Black Bears' defense shut the door down the stretch as Maine would go on to pick up its second-ever SEC victory, 52-41.
