Vann Tallies Double-Double in Men's Basketball Loss at Wagner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- University of Maine men's basketball freshman forward Issac Vann tallied his first career double-double with 28 points and 11 rebounds but the Black Bears were defeated at Wagner, 87-73.
Vann finished 8-for-12 from the floor, including a 3-for-4 mark from beyond the arc, and hit nine of 12 free throw attempts.
Fellow freshman Lavar Harewood added 14 points and six boards while Devine Eke chipped in nine points, three steals and two rebounds.
As a unit, the Black Bears shot 43.1% (22-for-51) and went 23-for-37 from the free throw line.
Wagner was led by guard Corey Henson's 24 points and seven assists.
The Seahawks were quick out the gate, running off the game's first eight points to take the early advantage. Wagner took its largest lead of the first half at 10:50 when JoJo Cooper's layup put Maine down 23-11.
The Black Bears began their charge wit ha 7-3 sprint capped on a pair of free throws from Troy Reid-Knight, trimming the lead to seven with 6:54 to play.
Wagner was able to respond, adding to its edge, but Maine again answered. Trailing by 11, the Black Bears hit five-straight on a layup from Aaron Calixte before Vann stroked a 3-pointer. After a pair of Seahawk free throws, Vann again answered with a three and Maine closed the half on a 5-0 run, chipping the lead down to 44-41 at the break.
Vann continued to have the hot hand, scoring Maine's first six points of the second half, as Maine found itself trailing by just a point.
The Wagner margin extended back out to five before a 7-0 run, with five-straight by Kevin Little, gave Maine the lead with 14:18 remaining in regulation.
A 13-0 streak from the Seahawks followed as the Black Bears quickly found themselves trailing 67-56 just over three minutes later.
The Wagner edge broadened to 20-points late in the second half. Maine was able to close the gap, finishing the game on an 8-2 run, but would run out of time, dropping the contest, 87-73.
Maine returns to action in its home opener on Wednesday, Nov. 25 when it hosts Longwood as part of a men's and women's doubleheader. The women tip-off at noon and will be follow by the men. For tickets, please visit TicketMaster.com
