Women's Basketball Stumbles at Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- The University of Maine women's basketball team (1-1) led Boston College (2-0) by seven late in the third period but could not hold on as it dropped a 55-48 decision on Sunday afternoon.
Liz Wood led all scorers, narrowly missing a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds while Sigi Koizar added 12 points, three boards and four assists.
Maine, which shot 32.7 percent (18-for-55) for the game, struggled in the second half as it went 8-for-27. Both teams finished 5-for-26 from 3-point range while Boston College came away with a slight edge in rebounding, 35-32.
The Eagles were led by Kelly Hughes who netted 13 points with a trio of 3-pointers.
The Black Bears trailed early as Boston College started hot, racing out to a 14-5 advantage with 2:42 left in the first quarter. Maine was able to rally as Bella Swan's layup 1:35 into the second period capped a 6-0 run to bring Maine back within three.
Trailing by five late in the half, the Black Bears put together a 5-0 sprint when Koizar knocked down a 3-pointer before a steal by Chantel Charles led to a bucket from Sophie Weckstrom to knot the score at 24-all.
The Eagles carried a two point lead into the break.
Maine came out of the break on fire as it began the second half on a 14-5 run, keyed by 3-pointers from Weckstrom and Wood, to take a 38-31 lead with 3:15 left in the third.
However, the Black Bears would go cold as Boston College answered with a 15-0 run to take a 46-38 lead.
Maine continued to fight, cutting the lead back down to five before Mikaela Gustafsson found Koizar for two as Maine trailed 51-48.
The Black Bears were forced to foul with 37-seconds left. Boston College would miss the free throw but come up with a big offensive rebound to maintain possession and eventually hold on for a 55-48 victory.
Maine is back in action on Friday, Nov. 20 when it travels to take on Minnesota. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.
