Women's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision to Binghamton

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss to visiting Binghamton on Sunday afternoon. Maine falls to 8-6-1 overall and 3-2-1 in America East action while Binghamton climbs to 2-11-2, 1-4-1 in league play.
Binghamton struck first at the 26th minute of the first half. Katherine Corcoran tallied her first goal of the season when she curved a direct corner kick into the Maine net, giving the Bearcats a 1-0 edge.
Maine had a couple key chances to even the score late in the second half. With the Binghamton keeper out of the net, Maine's Kate Evans fired a shot towards the goal but a Bearcats defender was able to protect the net and maintain a 1-0 edge.
Another key opportunity for the Black Bears followed shortly after when Vivien Beil broke in on a break away. Beil tried to beat Binghamton keeper Katie Hatziyianis to her right but Hatziyianis was able to make the save.
The Bearcats put the game away at 86:23 when Leighann Bennett scored off an assist from Hannah Shankman as Binghamton escaped with a 2-0 victory.
Maine held the edge in shots (20-15) and corner kicks (5-3). Claudia Dube-Trempe made seven saves for the Black Bears.
Maine returns to action on Oct. 22 when it hosts Stony Brook on senior night at 7 p.m.
