Soccer Defeats Stony Brook 2-0, Clinches Spot in America East Playoffs

ORONO, Maine -- The University of Maine Women's Soccer team defeats Stony Brook 2-0 and clinches a spot in the America East Playoffs.
With the win, Maine improves their record to 9-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in America East. Stony Brook is now 6-8-3 and 3-3-1 in conference play.
Claudia Dube-Trempe started in goal for the Black Bears.
In the first half Stony Brook had a clear advantage in total shots, outshooting Maine 10-2. Maine however was able to place all of their shots on net but weren't able to score.
At the half, Maine and Stony Brook were locked at 0-0.
In the second half, the Black Bears broke down the Sea Wolves' defense creating more opportunities on net and able to create more shots on target.
In the 68th minute, Maine was able to break their scoreless draught, from Senior Charlene Achille for her sixth goal of the season. The play unfolded off of a corner, and Hannah Lipinski was able to deliver a perfect pass to the foot of Achille to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead.
In the 80th minute Stony Brook's Tessa Devereaux was given a yellow card after a hard tackle. Seconds later Stony Brook was whistled for another foul just outside the penalty box.
Charlene Achille took the free kick for Maine and delivered a strike to the top post for her second goal of the game and her seventh of the season.
The Black Bears were able to hold off the Sea Wolves' attack late in final minutes to secure the victory.
Maine returns to action for their final game of the regular season Oct. 25 at Albany, kickoff is at 2:00 p.m.
