Women's Ice Hockey Defeats Merrimack 2-1

North Andover, Mass. -- The University of Maine Women's Ice Hockey defeats Merrimack 2-1 Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Maine improves to 2-4 on the season and 2-2 in Hockey East play, while Merrimack falls to 1-5 on the season and 1-1 in Hockey East.
Maine gave up an early first period goal, from Merrimack's Emily Volpe her second of the season and trailed 1-0.
The Black Bears outshot Merrimack 13-11 in the first period, Meghann Tracey saved a total of ten in the first.
Maine came out of the intermission aggressive, scoring an early second period goal from Catherine Tufts and the assist from Brooke Stacey to tie the game at 1-1.
11 minutes later, Maine took the lead off of a goal from Abbey Cook and the assist from Cassidy Herman and Brooklyn Langlois to give Maine a 2-1 advantage.
Tracey faced a flurry of shots, stopping all 16 in the second period.
The Black Bears were called for two penalties in the third, giving Merrimack two power play opportunities but they were unable to convert.
Tracey shutout Merrimack in the final two periods, stopping six in the third to preserve the victory for the Black Bears.
Maine returns to action Oct. 23 as they host Brown University in Auburn, Maine at the Norway Savings Bank Arena, puck drop is at 7:00 p.m.
