Men's Ice Hockey Drops 3-2 Decision at UMass

AMHERST, Massachusetts – The University of Maine men's ice hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to UMass on Friday night in Amherst, Mass. Maine took a 2-1 lead into the third period, but saw the Minutemen score two late goals to earn the win. Maine got goals from defensemen Dan Renouf (Pickering, Ontario) and Conor Riley (Massena, New York) in the game.
Maine struck first, 4:22 into the second period. Just after a power play expired, Eric Schurhamer (St. Paul, Minnesota) had a shot that UMass goalie Henry Dill saved. The rebound went right to Dan Renouf (Pickering, Ontario) in the left face-off circle. He fired a shot past Dill for his second goal of the season. Cam Brown (Natick, Massachusetts) also assisted on the goal for the Black Bears.
UMass tied the game with a short-handed goal at 10:01 of the second period. Brandon Montour carried the puck up the ice before dishing to Shane Walsh who fired the puck past Maine goalie Sean Romeo (Cary, North Carolina).
Maine took a 2-1 lead when Brown fed Conor Riley (Massena, New York) who had hit shot from the top of the face-off circle beat Dill at 14:24. For Riley, it was his second goal in three games. Blaine Byron (Manotick, Ontario) assisted on the goal for the Black Bears, which was a short-handed tally.
UMass tied the game at 2-2 at 10:27 of the third period when Steven Iacobellis had his shot cross the goal line, beating Romeo. Troy Power and Walsh also assisted on the goal.
UMass took their first lead of the night at 17:02 of the third period on a goal by Shane Walsh. Iacobellis assisted on what turned out to be the game-winner.
Maine outshot UMass 37-22 in the game. The Black Bears were 0-for-2 on the power play, while UMass finished the game 0-for-3.
Romeo made 19 saves in goal for the Black Bears and falls to 4-10-0. Henry Dill made 35 save in goal for the Minutemen and improves to 6-7-0.
Maine falls to 6-14-1 on the season, while UMass improves to 6-14-0.
The two teams conclude their two-game non-conference series on Saturday, Jan. 10. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 PM for the Mullins Center in Amherst.
