Strong Third Period Propels Maine Past New Hampshire, 3-0

DURHAM, New Hampshire --- The University of Maine women's ice hockey defeated New Hampshire 3-0 at Whittemore Center Saturday afternoon. Maine improves to 10-12-3 on the season, while New Hampshire falls to 7-18-1.
Meghann Treacy (Lake Peakskill, New York) and Vilma Vaattovaara saved a combined 16 shots on goal in the first period to keep the game scoreless. The Black Bears and Wildcats combined for zero goals in three power play opportunities in the first period.
The stalemate continued through the second period. Treacy saved 15 shots on goal, including stonewalling a New Hampshire power play. Vaattovaara saved all 9 shots on goal in the period.
The Black Bears finally broke the tie in the third period. Brooke Stacey (Kahnawake, Quebec) scored a power play goal at (6:54). Victoria Hummel (Tulln, Austra) found an unguarded Stacey who beat the Wildcats netminder stick-side, high. Hailey Browne (Oakville, Ontario) was also credited with an assist.
Maine added a little insurance at (17:44) with goal from Hailey Browne. A 4-on-1 opportunity found Browne open in the weak side face-off circle. She released a wrist shot that found its way past Vaattovaara. Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba) set up the scoring opportunity.
Audra Richards (Maplewood, Minnesota) added an empty net goal at (19:58) to give Maine a 3-0 lead. Brittney Huneke (Hastings, Minnesota) helped out on the play with an assist.
Meghann Treacy saved 36 of 36 shots on goal, and Vilma Vaattovaara saved 19 of 21 shots on goal. The Black Bears were 1-3 on the power play, while the Wildcats scored zero goals in two power play opportunities.
The Black Bears return to action February 1st at New Hampshire. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
