Wildcats Skate by Black Bears, 4-2

DURHAM, New Hampshire --- The University of Maine women's ice hockey lost to Hockey East New Hampshire 4-2 at Whittemore Center Sunday afternoon. Maine falls to 10-13-3 on the season, while New Hampshire improves to 8-18-1.
The Wildcats solved their weekend scoring woes with the first goal of the game at (11:45) from freshman Brooke Avery. It was her first career point. Jess Ryan had her shot saved by Meghann Treacy (Lake Peakskill, New York), but Avery crashed the net, corralled the rebound, and gave her team a 1-0 lead. Ali Praus was also credited with an assist.
New Hampshire added to their lead in the second period with a power play goal from Nicoline Jensen at (8:06). Amy Schlagel had her shot saved by Treacy. Within the scrum around the net, Jensen somehow poked the puck past the Black Bears' netminder. Sara Carlson had the secondary assist on the play.
Heather Kashman wasted little time in the third period to add a third goal for the Wildcats. Sara Carlson stole the puck from Emilie Brigham (Anoka, Minnesota) behind the UMaine goal. Carlson tried a wrap-around shot, but Treacy thwarted the opportunity. Kashman, like the other two goal-scorers, picked up the rebound and did the rest. After the third goal, the Black Bears substituted Mariah Fujimagari (Markham, Ontario) for Meghann Treacy.
Maine finally answered back with a goal from Jennifer More (Deloraine, Manitoba) at (3:21). Emilie Brigham led a fast break and left the puck for More. More ripped a one-timer from the face-off circle and narrowed the New Hampshire lead to 3-1.
Emilie Brigham backhanded the puck past Vilma Vaattovaara at (11:08) to pull Maine within a goal. Brooke Stacey (Kahnawake, Quebec) led Brigham with a perfect pass to guide her through the Wildcat defense. Brigham, along with the pass, included some nifty stick work to narrow the score to 3-2.
Jonna Curtis put a halt to the Black Bears rally and added some insurance for the Wildcats with a goal at (14:16). Kayla Mork had the only assist on the play.
Meghann Treacy saved 35 of 38 shots on goal, and after the substitution, Mariah Fujimagari saved 7 of 8 shots on goal. Vilma Vaattovaara saved 18 of 20 shots on goal for New Hampshire. The Black Bears were 0-2 on the power play, while the Wildcats scored one goal on two power play opportunities.
The Black Bears return to action February 7th against Vermont at the Alfond Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
