Baseball Falls to Furman at Stetson Invitational

DeLAND, Fla. --- The University of Maine baseball team dropped a 4-2 decision to Furman on Friday afternoon at the Stetson Invitational in DeLand, Fla. The Black Bears got a pair of hits from Shane Bussey (Boynton Beach, Fla.) in the game.
Maine falls to 1-6 on the season with the loss, while Furman improves to 4-5.
The Black Bears jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario), Steven Adam (Tecumseh, Ontario) and Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) had back-to-back-to-back hits to load the bases. Bussey then singled to right field plating Doran. Adam scored when Jonathan Salcedo (Providence, R.I.) hit a sacrifice fly.
Maine nearly added to its lead in the fourth inning when Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) doubled, but he was unable to cross the plate.
Furman tied the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. Andrew MacLatchie singled to center field and Sky Overton reached on a bunt single. Hunter Burton then singled to load the bases. MacLatchie and Overton both scored when Greg Harrison singled through the left side.
Furman took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Alex Abrams walked and scored when Griffin Davis doubled down the left field line. The Paladins added an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning when MacLatchie homered to left field.
Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) got the start for the Black Bears and went six innings. He allowed three runs on six while while striking out nine. He falls to 0-3 on the season. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) went 2.1 innings and allowed one run on one hit. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) retired the final two batters for the Black Bears.
Furmer starter Abrams went five innings and allowed a pair of runs on seven hits. Ryan Morse pitched three scoreless innings, while Brant Masters pitched the ninth inning to earn the save.
Maine returns to action when it faces Iowa on Saturday, March 1 at 1 PM in DeLand, Fla.
