Women's Basketball Tops Harvard for Fourth-Straight Victory

BANGOR, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team took a lead at the 12:29 mark in the first half and never looked back as it defeated Harvard by a score of 65-46 on Sunday afternoon. The victory is Maine's fourth-straight and improves the Black Bears to 5-3 overall.
Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) posted her third 20+ point scoring effort of the season as she matched a career-high with 25 points and added nine rebounds, four steals and three assists. Sigi Koizar (Vienna, Austria) chipped in 14 points and four assists while Anna Heise (Halle, Germany) netted eight.
Maine got off to a hot start from the field as it shot 56.0-percent (14-for-25) in the opening half and finished with a 48.9-percent mark (22-for-45). The Black Bears continued their solid defensive effort as they forced 20 Harvard turnovers with 13 steals. Maine controlled action down low as it outscored the Crimson 24-8 in the paint
With the game tied 7:05 into the contest, Maine reeled off 13 unanswered points, capping the run on a 3-pointer from Chantel Charles (London, U.K.) to take a 23-10 advantage with 4:53 left in the first half.
Harvard was able to close the gap to eight but Maine closed the half strong on an 8-0 run as Wood's 3-pointer with 9-seconds on the clock put the Black Bears on top 31-15 at the break.
The Crimson began the second half with a rally to cut the Maine lead to 10 before the Black Bears responded with six-straight from Wood to build the lead back to 16.
The offense continued to roll for Maine as Charles found Koizar for a 3-pointer to put Maine up by 22 at the midway point of the second half. A short while later, a layup from Heise and a free throw by Wood gave the Black Bears their largest lead of the contest, 58-35, with 7:14 remaining.
Maine's lead hovered around the 20-point margin for the remainder as the Black Bears hung on for their fourth-straight win, defeating the Crimson 65-46.
Maine returns to the court on Wednesday, Dec. 10 when it faces another Ivy League foe in Dartmouth at Cross Insurance Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
