BANGOR, Maine -- The University of Maine (6-3) picked up its fifth-straight win on Wednesday evening with a 53-38 decision over visiting Dartmouth (5-3). Sigi Koizar (Vienna, Austria) led the charge for the Black Bears as she went 7-for-7 from the free throw line on her way to netting a game-high 19 points to go along with seven rebounds and four assists.
Maine's defense forced 20 Dartmouth turnovers and turned those mishaps into a 27-2 edge in points off turnovers. Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) swept up five steals and added seven points and five rebounds while Sophie Weckstrom (Espoo, Finland) added nine points and three steals.
Maine, which led by as many as 18, got off to a hot start as it opened the game on a 16-4 run to take a 12 point lead on a 3-pointer from Bella Swan (Farmington, Ut.), 7:03 into the first half.
The Big Green fought back, closing to within three after Lakin Roland recorded nine points of an 11-2 run, to tighten the score up at 18-15 at the 4:19 mark.
Koizar put an end to the Dartmouth sprint with a layup. Maine closed the half on a 8-2 run with 3-pointers from Christiana Gerostergiou (Thessaloniki, Greece) and Weckstrom to take a 26-17 lead at the half.
Maine pushed its lead out to 14 early in the second half thanks to a trio of free throws from Wood. A 3-pointer from Dartmouth cut the lead back down to 11 before the Black Bears broke out a 6-0 run to elevate its advantage to 39-22 with 9:20 left in regulation.
The Black Bears' lead would not dip under 12 the rest of the way as they hung on to their fifth-straight victory by a score of 53-38.
Maine looks to make it six-straight on Saturday when it takes on Northeastern at 1 p.m.
