Strong Second Half Lifts Maine Past Northeastern

BANGOR, Maine -- The University of Maine women's basketball team used a 22-2 run to start the second half to distance itself from Northeastern and ultimately lead it to a 60-51 victory. The win is the Black Bears' sixth in a row and moves them to 7-3 overall while the Huskies slip to 2-4.
Maine was led by Sigi Koizar (Vienna, Austria) who tallied 15 points with three assists and three steals while Liz Wood (Catlett, Va.) recorded her first double-double of the season with 10 points and a season-high 12 rebounds. Sophie Weckstrom (Espoo, Finland) knocked down a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 14 points.
The Black Bears went 19-for-43 (44.2%) from the floor and hit 15 of 20 free throws on their way to the win. Maine forced 16 Northeastern turnovers and held the Huskies to a 30.6 percent mark from the field.
Maine, which never trailed in the game, engaged in a close contest throughout much of the first half but began to separate itself with a late 7-2 run to give it a 19-13 advantage with 4:06 to play in the opening stanza.
Northeastern battled back to cut the lead down to three before Weckstrom hit a 3-pointer in the closing minutes of the half to build the lead back to six. Maine carried a 22-18 advantage into the half.
The Black Bears came out of the halftime break on fire as they broke out a 22-2 run over the opening 13-minutes of the second half to take their largest lead of the game, 44-20.
Northeastern did not go quietly as it responded with a 24-9 run to cut the Maine lead all the way back down to nine.
However, with only a minute remaining, the Black Bears were able to hit some key free throws down the stretch to secure they sixth-straight win, 60-51.
Maine heads on the road for its next two contests beginning with a neutral site match-up in Myrtle Beach, S.C. against #6 North Carolina.
