Hamilton Tallies Three Points But No. 20 Maine Field Hockey Falls to Cornell, 3-2

ALBANY, N.Y. - The No. 20 University of Maine field hockey team was sparked by a three-point performance by senior Annabelle Hamilton but it wasn't enough as the team fell to Cornell, 3-2 in a neutral site contest in Albany, N.Y. With the loss the Black Bears fall to 10-8 overall and 3-2 in America East play.
Hamilton got Maine on the board early in the contest but the Big Red scored three straight markers to help sink the Black Bears.
Hamilton's goal came in the game's fourth minute off a penalty corner with Becca Paradee and Nicole Sevey, recording assists.
Cornell's run began in the 16th minute as Katie Carlson knotted the game off a rebound in front of Cochran.
Krysten Mayers scored the first of her two goals minutes later as she scored on the left side of the cage by the end line to give the Big Red its first lead of the day.
Coming out of halftime Mayers struck again in the 50th minute as she took a pass from Taylor Standiford as she cashed in on the insurance marker to make it 3-2.
Jessica Skillings got Maine within striking distance in the 68th minute as she scored off a rebound with Hamilton recording an assist on the play, however it wasn't enough as Cornell shut the door the rest of the way.
Cornell held the advantage in shots on goal, 11-9 while Maine had four penalty corners to the Big Red's one.
Emma Cochran got the start in goal and fell to 5-3 overall as she made four saves on six shots on goal in the losing effort. Corbett started the second half and made one save on two shots on goal her 35 minutes of action.
Kelly Johnson made four saves on six shots for the Big Red.
Maine had entered the weekend with an eight game winning streak but #13 Albany snapped the streak yesterday with a 3-0 victory over the Black Bears.
Maine will head home for one final regular season contest when it hosts rival New Hampshire on Oct. 31 at the UMaine Field Hockey Complex. The game will begin at 3 p.m.
