
Maine Falls to Binghamton, Looks to Stay Alive Against Stony Brook

Lowell, Mass. -- The University of Maine baseball team dropped the winners bracket game of the 2013 America East Tournament on Friday afternoon to Binghamton 10-2. The game was originally started on Thursday night, but was suspended just past 11:30 PM due to rain. Maine will face Stony Brook on Friday at 4 PM for the right to take on Binghamton in the championship round.
For the second night in a row, Maine jumped out to a lead in the first inning. Speedy Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) beat out an infield single and Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) followed and belted a home run high over the right field fence. It was the fourth home run of the season for Fransoso.
Binghamton got a run back in the bottom of the second inning. Brian Ruby singled and scored when Bill Bereszniewicz singled to the right side. The Bearcats tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning. David Schanz singled to center field and moved to third on a hit by Jake Thomas. Schanz scored on a ground out.
Binghamton took a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nick Pancerella singled and Bill Bereszniewicz drew a base on balls. Zach Blanden followed with a double to left center field, driving home both runners. Blanden scored the third run of the inning on an error.
Binghamton tacked on three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Shaun McGraw singled and Ruby walked. Both runners advanced a base on a sacrifice by John Howell. McGraw scored on a wild pitch. Ruby scored when Bereszniewicz singled. Zach Blanden followed with a double, plating Bereszniewicz.
Binghamton added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Jake Thomas singled and Nevares followed with a double. Thomas scored on a wild pitch and Nevares crossed the plate when McGraw singled.
Maine starter A.J. Bazdanes (Nashua, N.H.) went four inning on the mound. He allowed five runs, four of which were earned, on seven hits. He suffered the loss and falls to 6-6 on the season. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) replaced Marks and went 1.1 inning. He allowed a pair of runs on three hits. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) allowed a run on two hits in a third of an inning. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) took the mound when the game resumed on Friday afternoon. He allowed two runs on four hits in 1.1 inning.
Jack Rogalla went seven innings for the Bearcats to earn the win. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five. He improves to 5-4 on the season. Greg Ostner pitched the final two innings and surrendered three hits.
Maine returns to action at 4 pm this afternoon when it faces Stony Brook to stay alive in the 2013 America East Tournament.
