Connolly Pitches a Gem, but Baseball Falls to Stony Brook 1-0 in 10 Innings

ORONO, Maine – Stony Brook scored the lone run of the game in the top of the 10th inning to recorded a 1-0 win over the University of Maine baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond. The Black Bears fall to 24-15 on the season with the loss and 13-4 in America East play, while Stony Brook improves to 14-26 overall, 7-11 in conference play.
It was a pitcher's duel from the beginning; however, Maine left the bases loaded in the first inning behind a walk, hit and hit-by-pitch. Maine pitcher Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) was brilliant, at one time retiring 12 straight Seawolves.
The Black Bears threatened in the bottom of the ninth inning of the scoreless game. Kyle Silva (Warwick, R.I.) and Eric White (Brewer, Maine) drew back-to-back walks. Nick Bernardo (Glenmont, N.Y.) pinch ran for Silva at second base. Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) singled to center field, but Bernardo was tagged out at the plate.
Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) replaced Connolly to start the 10th inning. Joshua Mason walked and Michael Hubbard reached on a fielder's choice. Mason was safe at second on the play. Mason scored the lone run of the game when Jack Parenty singled to center field.
Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) was hit and moved to second in the bottom of the 10th inning, but was stranded there.
Connolly pitched nine scoreless innings in which he allowed just four hits and struck out five batters. Morrill went one inning and allowed one run on one hit while striking out one. He falls to 2-1 on the season.
Daniel Zamora went eight innings for Stony Brook and surrendered three hits while fanning nine. Chad Lee pitched the final two innings. He allowed one hit and walked a pair. Lee picks up the win and improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Black Bears return to action on Tuesday, April 23 when they face Holy Cross in Sanford, Maine. First pitch is set for 5:30 PM.
