Baseball Drops Game Against Iowa

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. -- The University of Maine baseball team fell to Iowa 9-2 on Friday afternoon in Florida. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) and Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) each had a pair of hits for the Black Bears.
Maine jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine) singled, stole second and scored when Doran singled to center field.
Iowa took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Keith Brand, who singled, scored on a balk. Blake Hickman, who singled through the right side, scored on a single by Kris Goodman and Dan Sheppard scored on an error on the play.
The Hawkeyes added six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jake Yacinich had a two run single in the inning, while Jimmy Frankos drove in one with a single.
Maine got a run back in the top of the seventh inning. Black singled to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) singled to center field.
Tommy Lawrence (West Haven, Conn.) got the start on the mound for the Black Bears. He went 5.1 innings and surrendered eight runs, seven of which were earned, on 10 hits. He struck out three and falls to 1-2 on the season. Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) went two thirds of an inning and allowed one unearned run. Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) pitched a scoreless inning for the Black Bears. Steve Trask (Saco, Maine) and Nick DeFrank (Mulica Hill, N.J.) combined to pitch a scoreless eighth inning.
Sasha Kuebel went seven innings in the start for Iowa. He allowed two runs on eight hits and improves to 1-3 on the season. Josh Martsching allowed one hit in the final two innings.
Maine falls to 6-10 on the season, while Iowa improves to 5-6.
The Black Bears return to action on Saturday, March 9 when they face West Virginia at 11 AM.
