
Baseball Drops Series Finale to Albany

The University of Maine baseball team dropped the series finale 7-6 to Albany on Sunday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine. The Black Bears fall to 15-14 on the season and 6-3 in America East play, while Albany improves to 8-13 overall, 4-5 in conference play.
Albany jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. D.J. Hoagboon doubled to right center field and scored when Gordon Madej singled up the middle. The Great Danes added a run in the top of the second inning. Brian Bullard reached on an error and scored when Hoagboon fielder's choice.
Maine got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second inning. Alex Calbick (Burnaby, British Columbia) drew a base on balls and then scored when Eric White (Brewer, Maine) singled to left field.
Albany extended its lead to 3-1 in the top of the sixth inning. Jeff Welsh walked and scored when Matt Hinchy singled up the middle.
Maine scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead. Calbick was hit to lead off the inning and Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) followed with a double to the right field corner. Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) was hit to load the bases. Calbick scored when White reach on an error. Doran tied the game at 3-3 when Troy Black (Mississauga, Ontario) grounded out. Whitten scored the go ahead run on a wild pitch. White and Sam Balzano (Portland, Maine), who walked, scored when Michael Fransoso (Portsmouth, N.H.) singled.
Albany answered right back. Greg Muller and Nolan Gaige both singled. Hoagboon reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Muller scored when Madej singled. Gaige scored the second run of the inning when Josh Nethaway singled to center field. Welsh drove home Hoagboon with a single to right field to tie the score at 6-6.
Albany took the lead in the top of the eighth inning. Greg Muller singled, stole second base and scored when Hoagboon singled down the left field line.
Shaun Coughlin (Northford, Conn.) got the start for Maine and went four innings. He allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on four hits. Jake Marks (Sarnia, Ontario) replaced Shaun Coughlin. Mark went two innings and allowed two runs, one of which was earned, on five hits. Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) pitched the final three innings for the Black Bears. He allowed one run on three hits and suffers the loss. He falls to 1-3 on the season.
Ryan Stinar went five innings in the start for Albany. He allowed four runs, three of which were earned, on three hits. Andrew Jaurique allowed one unearned run in a third of an inning. Derek Zielinski went 3.1 innings to earn the victory. He improves to 2-3 on the season after allowing just one unearned run on one hit.
Maine returns to action on Saturday, April 6 when it hosts Binghamton for a doubleheader starting at 1 PM.
