
Black Bears Honor 17 Student-Athletes on Academic Recognition Night

Orono, Maine – The University of Maine women's ice hockey shined on student-athlete appreciation night with 17 of its 24 student-athletes being honored. Senior Brittany Ott (St. Clair Shores, Michigan) led the way for the Black Bears as she earned the 2013 "M" Club Dean Smith Award, which is awarded to the male and female student-athlete with outstanding academic and athletics achievement.
The Black Bear women's ice hockey team received several medals for their academic achievements of the 2012 academic year. Seven freshman received Maine *Rising Star* awards for having a 3.0 or better GPA in their first semester at Maine. All scholar athletes will receive a medallion, the color of which represents the number of years that a recipient has earned the award. This year, four women's ice hockey student-athletes received a bronze medal signifying the first time that they have received the award, three received silver medals signifying the second time that they have received the award, and three student-athletes received gold medals signifying the third time that they have received the award.
