Baseball Falls At Florida Atlantic

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- The University of Maine baseball team fell at Florida Atlantic 15-6 on Wednesday evening in Boca Raton, Fla. The Black Bears and Owls split the two game series, as Maine took the opener 8-0 on Tuesday evening. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) led the Maine offense as he recorded three hits and scored a run.
Maine falls to 9-11 on the season with the loss, while Florida Atlantic improves to 11-7.
Florida Atlantic scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Tyler Rocklein singed up the middle and Mitch Morales followed with a walk. Sean Murrell followed with a single to third base to load the bases. Two runs scored when Brendon Sanger singled to right field. Levi Mayer followed with a single to left field scoring both Murrell and Sanger.
Maine got a run back in the top of the third inning. Mike Connolly (Bridgewater, Mass.) singled and scored on a wild pitch.
The Owls, however, answered with three more runs in the bottom of the frame. Corey Keller walked and scored when Ricky Santiago doubled to left center. Rocklein followed with a double to right field and Santiago advanced to third base. Both runners scored when Morales hit a two-run single to center field.
Maine pulled to within two runs with four in the top of the fourth inning. Brian Doran (Ayr, Ontario) led off the inning with a single through the right side. Fran Whitten (Westborough, Mass.) then singled to right as well and Doran advanced to third base. Kyle Silva (Warwick, R.I.) doubled down the left field line scoring both Doran and Whitten. Connolly followed with a single and Silva advanced to third base. He scored when Colin Gay (Franklin, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly. Connolly scored the fourth run of the inning on a balk.
The Owls answered in the bottom of the fifth inning with four runs. Murrell doubled down the left field line and scored when Sanger singled up the middle. Geoff Jimenez reached on a fielder's choice and Sanger advanced to third on an error. Sanger scored when Meyer hit a sacrifice fly. Jimenez scored when Nelson singled to center field. Keller drew a walk and Nelson moved to second base. Nelson scored when Rocklein singled to right field.
Florida Atlantic added a run in the bottom of the sixth. Sanger singled and Jimenez drew a walk. Both runners advanced a base before Meyer walked. Sanger scored when Nelson hit a sacrifice fly.
Maine threatened in the top of the seventh inning, but was only able to push across one run. Scott Heath (Westbrook, Maine) singled up the middle and Eric White (Brewer, Maine) followed with a single through the left side. Nick Bernardo (Glenmont,
loaded the bases with a single to left. Heath scored when Whitten hit a sacrifice fly.
Florida Atlantic got a pair in the bottom of the inning when Rocklein hit a two-run home run. The Owls added one run in the bottom of the eighth inning to make it a 15-6 final.
Logan Fullmer (Lebanon, Pa.) got he start on the mound for the Black Bears. He allowed four runs on four hits in 1.2 innings. Fullmer picks up the loss and falls to 1-2 on the season. He was replaced by Luke Morrill (South Thomaston, Maine) who allowed three runs in two thirds of an inning. D.J. Voisine (Plainville, Conn.) allowed just one hit in 1.1 innings. He was replaced by Steve Trask (Saco, Maine) who allowed two runs, one of which was earned, in a third of an inning. Charlie Butler (Marlborough, Mass.) surrendered two runs with just one being earned, in one inning. He was replaced by Burk FitzPatrick (Berwyn, Pa.) who allowed a run in one inning. Whitten went an inning and allowed a pair of runs. Heath pitched the bottom of the eighth. He allowed one run on two hits.
Seth McGarry got the start for FAU and allowed two runs, on four hits over three innings. He picks up the win. McGarry was replaced by Andrew Archer, who allowed three runs in a third of an inning. Bo Logan did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings. Gregg Bennis allowed one run in two innings. He was replaced by Kyle Miller who pitched a scoreless inning. Hugh Adams went the final inning for the Owls.
Maine return to action on Saturday, March 16 when it opens America East Conference play at reigning America East Champion Stony Brook. The two teams will play a doubleheader starting at 12 noon in Stony Brook, N.Y.
