Swimming and Diving Competes at Providence

PROVIDENCE, R.I.- The University of Maine men's and women's swimming and diving teams continued their season with a meet against Providence on Friday night. The women's team beat Providence 186.5-94.5 and the men tied Providence each with 144. Junior Naja Harvey (Orono, Minn.) and senior Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and freshman Kailey Dowd (Mendon, Mass.) each picked up two wins for the Black Bears. On the men's side sophomore David Vittori (South Berwick, Maine) had two wins followed by Matt England (Bangor, Maine) and John Carlucci (Danbury, Conn.) each picked up a win.
Dowd took first place in the 800-meter freestyle (9:23.30) and the 400 meter freestyle (4:39.95) followed by Courtney Norman (Pointe-Claire, Quebec) in second (4:44.41). Senior Shannon Bender (Cumberland, R.I.) had a first place finish in the 200 meter backstroke (2:26.15) followed by teammates Kayla Merchant (Sebec, Maine) in second place (2:29.10) and senior Emily Buczkowski (Woolwich, Maine) in third (2:30.40). Harvey helped the black bears with first place finishes in both the 100-meter breaststroke (1:15.00) and the 200 meter breaststroke (2:41.34)
Senior Lauren Dwyer (Orono, Maine) finished second in the 200-meter freestyle (2:11.28) followed by Bender in third (2:13.00). Sophomore Amber Murray (Dover, Maine) had strong finishes for the black bears placing first in the 100-meter backstroke (1:10.28) followed by Buczkowski in second and Merchant in third. Erica Smrcina had another strong meet finishing first in the 200-meter butterfly (2:25.06) followed by teammate Taylor Sharp (Burlington, Ontario) in second (2:29.41). Smrcina also had a first place finish 100 meter butterfly (1:05.30) followed by freshman Katerina Mosquera-Cardi (Montreal, Canada) in second (1:06.66) and Sharp in third (1:07.80).
On the men's side Vittori finished first in the 800 meter freestyle (8:52.08) followed by Cody Lachance in third (9:19.60). Vittori also took first in the 400 meter freestyle (4:15.47).
England had strong finishes placing first in the 100 meter backstroke and second in the 200 meter butterfly (2:11.26) followed by Carlucci in third (2:12.26). Carlucci had his own win in the 200-meter backstroke (2:11.58). Ryan Fahey (Quincy, Mass.) took first in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:29.04) followed by senior Caleb Hoffman (2:39.51). Sergey Terrio (Oakland, Maine) helped his team with a first place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (59.47) followed by Cameron Dwyer (Orono, Maine) in third. Dwyer had another third place finish in the 200-meter freestyle (2:01.91).
Maine swept that diving with senior Kara Capossela finishing first in the one meter (258.37) followed by freshman Hayli Weitz in third. Freshman Ethan Eckhoff won the diving for the men (209.00).
Maine continues their season with a meet against Boston College on Sunday.
