Perakslis Drafted in 21st Round By the Chicago Cubs

ORONO, Maine-- University of Maine baseball pitcher Stephen Perakslis (Abington, Mass.) has been selected in the 21st round of the 2012 MLB Entry Draft, 644th overall, by the Chicago Cubs. He becomes the second Black Bear drafted in as many days, joining Jeffrey Gibbs (Toronto, Ontario) who was selected in the ninth round, 303rd overall, by the Arizona Diamondbacks yesterday.
Perakslis pitched in 46 games for the Black Bears, making 33 starts the past three seasons. He has a career record of 15-13 with a 4.40 ERA. He struck out 156 batters in 214.2 innings the past three season.
Perakslis, who just completed his junior season for the Black Bears, played in 15 games for Maine this season. An American East Second Team selection, he finished 5-5 with a team-best 3.81 ERA. His 14 starts were tops on the team and his five wins tied for the team-lead. He struck out 48 batters. He picked up a win over Albany in the 2012 America East Tournament.
As a sophomore, he finished 6-4 with a 3.52 ERA. He earned the victory against Albany in the 2011 America East Championship game. He saw action against Boston North Carolina and Florida International in the 2011 NCAA Regional.
As a freshman, Perakslis finished 4-4 on the season with a 6.33 ERA. He earned a save in Maine's 5-3 win over North Carolina, who was ranked 11th in the nation at the time.
He is the fourth Black Bear selected in the MLB Entry Draft in the past two years. Outfielder Taylor Lewis and pitcher Keith Bilodeau were each selected a year ago.
