Men's Basketball's Second Half Rally Falls Short Against Vermont

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine men's basketball team second half rally fell short as Vermont pulled away late for 73-63 win Monday in the Memorial Gym. Maine falls to 11-11 overall and 5-6 in America East play while Vermont goes to 16-10 and 10-2 in league play. Maine was led by its America East Player of the Game Gerald McLemore (San Diego, Calif.) who had 20 points.
The Catamounts got off to a hot start, taking a 13-7 lead, but McLemore nailed a three over a Catamount defender to stop the run.
Vermont countered with a 7-to-2 run, taking a 20-12 lead with just under 13 minutes left.
The Catamounts caught fire, expanding their lead to 34-19 with 4:33 left.
Maine chipped into the lead as Mike Allison (Lynden, Ontario), McLemore and Justin Edwards (Whitby, Ontario) made layups, making it 37-25 at half.
McLemore led Maine with 11 points in the first half while Edwards had four points, four assist and three rebounds.
The Black Bears shot 36.7 percent in the first half while the Catamounts shot 44.8 percent. Vermont made 7-10 from the charity stripe while the Maine was 0-2.
The Catamounts took a 40-25 lead to open the second half, but Maine came back with an 11-to-5 run courtesy of four points from Allison and Edwards.
McLemore brought Maine within six moments layer on a layup and the foul, and an Allison block followed by a pair of Raheem Singleton (Boston, Mass.) free throws made it a four-point game.
Vermont pushed it back to 57-46 with just under seven minutes to play, but Maine came back again as McLemore swished a three from the corner to cap a 9-to-4 run and make it 61-55 with 3:11 left.
However, Vermont came back with a pair of layups and hit six free throws down the stretch to pull away.
Edwards finished with 15 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three blocks while Allison had 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocks.
Brian Voelkel was Vermont's Player of the Game with nine points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
