
Swimming & Diving Sweep Weekly Awards

ORONO, Maine -- Four members of the University of Maine swimming & diving squads garnered weekly awards for America East Swimmers and Divers of the Week, as announced by the conference on Tuesday. Erica Smrcina (North Falmouth, Mass.) and Robbie Bickford (Milford, Maine) were each named America East Swimmers of the Week while Kara Capossela (Greenwich, Conn.) and Travis Wibby were honored as the America East Divers of the Week.
Smrcina played a part in three victories for the Black Bears in their meet against Bates College over the weekend. The junior won both the 200-yard butterfly (2:12.51) and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:33.09) before helping the 200-yard medley relay team to a win.
Bickford swept the distance events for the Black Bears. The senior won both the 1000-yard freestyle (10:18.19) and the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.92) as Maine defeated Bates 159-139.
On the diving boards, Capossela took home her third weekly diving award of the season. The junior picked up wins in the one-meter (249.70) and the three-meter (255.70) events in helping the Black Bears to a 182-104 victory over Bates.
Wibby garnered his second diving award thus far as he placed second in both events. Wibby took home second place in both the one-meter event (219.85) and the three-meter (198.65).
The Black Bears return to action on Jan. 17 at 4 PM when they host Providence College.
